Top 5 Linux Misconceptions
I could hardly believe the words in this blog piece from ZDNET. Surely, I must have missed something along the way? But rather than bad mouthing yet another "hot air" article, I will look at each point to see where our opinions differ.
(Questions quoted from ZDNET)
Question 1: On the whole, users aren’t all that dissatisfied with Windows
Unlike the blogger in question, I once worked in the PC repair industry, and I know I’m qualified to share true, fact based user experiences that are not to be read like I obtained them through second hand sources.
First off, it's not so much that people are dissatisfied with any one OS; most of them are just tired of the never ending headaches that their PCs give them. And guess what, 100 percent of the time, these individuals were using Windows as their OS. So, when Adrian refers to users not being "all that dissatisfied," I can only assume that he is referring to the limited number of Windows power users who understand how to dodge Windows XP bullets with spyware, viruses and worms?
I do agree with Adrian's point regarding people not wishing to drop their current OS with the first time of trouble, he hit the nail on the head there. Let me share this: after that person comes to see you over and again for the same type of issues in hopes of you providing a "secure" fix to their woes, should someone offer them a free alternative, do not think for a second that people are not willing to give a serious consideration.
Question 2: Too many distros

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |

Matt Feeds the ZDNet Troll
Why do they keep feeding the Dvoraks of ZDNet? Seriously, people must become aware of who trolls and then avoid them as a matter of principle. No shills like Enderle, no flamebait like Murphy or Dawson... they'll only keep on teasing and then 'make up' for more traffic.
Just yesterday:
Do not feed the troll

| Linux people tend to look up and understand technical issues, and even
| legal ones such as the differences between patent, copyright, and
| trademark. If you've been reading Linux sites and software licenses
| for a while, you pick up the basics. And magazines don't hire fact
| checkers any more, and if a magazine pays a columnist less, doesn't
| edit his work, and calls it a "blog" they can hold it to a lower
| standard of quality anyway.

|
| Please. Do not feed the troll. Comment forms equal hits and money.
| If you must respond, email the publication's editor (be sure to put
| in "NOT FOR PUBLICATION") and post your comments--use "nofollow"
| links if you choose to link--on your own blog or on a competing
| site. The Mainstream IT Media is becoming more and more driven by
| raw traffic numbers, and as editors see good results from trolling,
| they'll tend to rely on it more.
