Novell To Press On With Microsoft Alliance, With Or Without Microsoft
Novell plans to continue to distribute the latest versions of open source software to customers who purchased its Linux product through Microsoft, even though Microsoft itself has decided to make parts of the software unavailable, a Novell spokesman said.
Microsoft last week said that it will not distribute through its sales and marketing alliance with Novell any open source software that is licensed under the latest version of the General Public License for open source products. That's because Microsoft is concerned that certain provisions of GPLv3 would prevent the company from pursuing legal action against open source developers it believes are violating its intellectual property rights.
In an e-mail Monday, Novell's spokesman said the company would fill the gap by distributing portions of its SUSE Linux enterprise suite that fall under the GPLv3 license directly to customers who purchased certificates that would have entitled them to receive the software from Microsoft.
