Ubuntu Live 2007 Day 2
On the second day of the Ubuntu Live 2007 conference presented by Canonical and O'Reilly was a keynote by Intel's Doug Fisher, Matt Zimmerman, and Tim O'Reilly among others. Also taking place were sessions on such topics as CloneZilla, Ubuntu on laptops, Dell Linux systems, and over two dozen other sessions.

Tim O'Reilly is keynoting today's Ubuntu Live conference, even as I type. I spoke just before him, and he's now throwing out much of what I said. (I argued that we need to be more religious about open source, not less, by which I meant "filled with passion," not "filled with fury toward unbelievers," which is not a religion that I've seen much of on the earth today.)
Tim is talking about the rising tide of Ubuntu, using book data, search data, and other things (see right) that lead him to believe that Ubuntu is clearly growing in popularity.
Matt Zimmerman, CTO of Canonical, gave the Ubuntu Live attendees here a look ahead on the Ubuntu Technical Roadmap, letting us see what's coming in Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop and Server.
Users with high-end monitor needs will be happy to hear that the Ubuntu release known as Gutsy Gibbon should have 3-D desktop functionality working right out of the box. Multiple monitor configuration will also be provided in the release. If you have a laptop, power profiling features are planned for the desktop version.
“This project is about people.” I think this sums up the Ubuntu project really well and was part of the introduction from Matt’s keynote presentation. The real importance–the real measure of our success–is the people within the project.
Based on the needs of previous releases Ubuntu 7.04 “Feisty” has been a huge success with many, many improvements. Ubuntu 7.10 “Gutsy”, which will be released in Oct, will support 3D-desktop, multi-monitor support, laptop power profiling and more OUT OF THE BOX.
