NASA Develops Stackable Linux SBCs For Planetary Rovers
NASA is developing SBCs (Single Board Computers) for a "reconfigurable scalable computing" project, which NASA plans to use in future planetary rovers and mining vehicles. The objective is to design stackable SBCs running uClinux . It's field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) can be re-programmed remotely, so that resources can be reallocated in changing conditions without direct access to the system. NASA is collaborating with a group at the University of Queensland, Australia, that has worked on open source projects adapting Linux for use in FPGAs. In particular, they have demonstrated how Linux is a powerful platform for designing self- and remotely reconfigurable systems.
