The 'spirit' of open source, now invoked
Besides the legal aspects of the GPL, some believe there should be a 'spirit' of it too
MySQL Takes Another Step (Away from Open Source):
The GPL requires us (like anybody else) to hand out the code to those whom we give the binaries, which in the case of MySQL Enterprise Server is just the customers.
When I criticized some other projects or companies for not acting in the spirit of the open source, I was ridiculed. Now, this MySQL developer is definitely right. Maybe, as someone is quoted saying in Changes at MySQL draw fire from community, the change fulfills GPLv2's requirements, as "something that we've verified with the FSF (Free Software Foundation) to eliminate any doubt." But this is definitely against the spirit of F/LOSS.
