Open source in the UK: investigate, approve and ignore
Over a year ago CBR published a look at the UK's adoption of open source software in the UK and promised a later update. That update is long overdue, and is also timely given that tomorrow some of the leading open source advocates in the country will gather in Westminster to debate the future of open source in this country.
To some extent the fact that the debate is taking place is indicative of a slightly improved attitude towards open source in the UK public sector, but in truth, not much has changed. The following post updates the previous one with details of new developments in the last year.
Central Government Policy
That attitude is exemplified by the UK Government's official policy towards open source, which takes a typically New Labour 'third way' approach that could either be left or right of centre, depending on your point of view.
The policy was last updated in November 2004 and states that open source software should be considered alongside proprietary software with contracts awarded on a value-for-money basis.
