SuSE 10.3: How the mighty have fallen.
My biggest period of fandom for SuSE was around the 9.x series of releases. During that time I actually bought 3 full retail boxed sets of the OS and used them exclusively for day to day work and play.
Since around SuSE 10.0, I've not been as happy with SuSE for a number of reasons, most of them aesthetic. There is also that thing about a major corporate Linux still not including something as simple as MP3 support and buying into the Microsoft protection racket.
Install:
I originally had planned to install this via a DVD that someone burned for me, but that plan was thwarted when I booted it and was dumped to an ncurses text error prompt that said "Unable to locate repository." I then tried to run the installer and it could not find the DVD it just used to boot itself.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |

openSuSE or SUSE???
just a few comments:
'no mp3 support'
(simply ask wether SuSE or openSuSE was installed) for openSuSE you have a very easy way to install the needed codecs and SuSE probably comes with this support as you paid for it.
'no gcc'
yes for a cd install there is the problem that gcc and development packages are no longer an option, just install with the net plugged in or grab the dvd for development. Not a perfect solution buit for £20 it's not hard to get a dvdrom drive in the current market.
'can't find install cd'
I have had a similar error across numerous distibutions as of late and as soon as I can track down what is causing this bug I will be trying to let whoever know it exists
My problem is when I boot from an external dvdrw drive with the primary drive closed the installer attempts to read from the closed primary disk drive (disk present or not), this occurs in gentoo, sabayon, opensuse, fedora and mandriva from what I remember but I don't know what is causing the installers to be lazy and boot from the primary drive.
'no 3d support'
this was blamed on lack of gcc but did you try to download form the repositories (ok the ati one is most likely broken, but the nvidia one works fine) this shouldn't be blamed on lack of gcc it's more of a lack of internet (but I do sympathise with the comments)
'large swap partition'
disks are getting bigger cheaper and I assume as you have 2Gb of RAM it's thinking you want 2x2Gb RAM to be able to run memory hungry processes. you could just alter it in the installer quite easily.
as for the rest of the article, just someone's opinion and their welcome to it. but I will be keeping mine
