Being a good netizen – protecting Linux from network nasties
Microsoft Windows attracts virus writers and malware like faeces attracts flies. On the far opposite end of the spectrum, Linux users never find themselves embroiled in debates over whether Norton AntiVirus is bloated or essential, or whether AVG is better than e-Trust. Yet, Linux users do need to put thought and effort into security tools and here’s why.
In 2003, Keith Peer, the CEO of Central Command, a Linux antivirus product, stated there were under 100 native Linux viruses. Obviously, this is a trite and pithy number compared to the Microsoft world, but it does draw attention to the fact Linux viruses do exist; there is no truth in the rumour that there is no such thing as a Linux virus.
Instead, a list of known Linux malware – albeit very small – can be found on Wikipedia. And, while not a virus, the Morris worm infected about 6,000 major UNIX machines as have other notable worms.
Before we go on, let’s dispel another myth.
