OpenSUSE 10.3: Preliminary thoughts
I don’t often try a new distro seriously (I have a folder full of QEMU images, but it’s just not the same as a proper installation), but recently I felt the itch and downloaded OpenSUSE 10.3 and installed it on my laptop.
It’s only been installed a few hours, so I can’t say too much about it, but the first thing that strikes me is how well-integrated the artwork is. One of my most common gripes with artwork in Linux distros is the lack of a unified feel- the GDM, while it looks cool, doesn’t fit with the bootsplash, which doesn’t fit with the grub splash, which doesn’t fit with the GNOME theme, which really is alright with the icons used but it isn’t that great. It all looks a bit amateurish and sometimes, even if the themes are all consistent (which is rare), it just doesn’t look that good.
OpenSUSE has a mostly consistent, good-looking theme throughout. Even the applications have customized splash screens:

My latest experiment has been openSUSE. And, I have to say, it’s been a very good experience. Everything Just Works (TM), or near enough.
