SAM Linux 2008 'Claws' rc1: A Brief Visual Tour
FIRST I went “Wow!”, followed soon after by an “Eugh!”
The “Wow!” came about as a result of watching SAM Linux 2008 'Claws rc1' launching as a live CD on my test machine.
The boot splash, the login screen – they're stylish and lovely and more than a little bit green, but in a nice way.
Then there's a Mac-style kicker panel atop the Xfce desktop (I love Xfce for its speed) with beautifully-scaled, pop-up icons.
Even the start-up sound that accompanied the desktop launch was nice, a kind of pastoral trill that made me think of, well, pastures.
But then came the “Eugh!”, as a result of me realising how ghastly the default wallpaper is in SAM Linux.
It's a cross between a distant landscape and a piece of green swooshy artwork, with a horrid graduated blend between the two just off-centre.
To be honest, the only reason I'm making a fuss about that wallpaper is because I couldn't really find much else to complain about, and I do so like to complain about something.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
