Introducing Open Source to the World - Part 1
As part of an ongoing experiment, and effort to help my fellow students, I've been working on a project to inform everyone I meet, any chance I have, about the benefits of Open Source and the joy of using Linux and BSD on their computers.
So far my initial efforts received a cold shoulder and a rather dead welcome. I can't say that the experiment was a total loss, as I did learn a few things from the experience. One thing, which I'd already been seeing in other arenas of interaction was that, ideologies mean nothing to people anymore, and are ineffective when trying to make converts.
In other words, the things we hold dearly, things such as software freedom, open source, open standards and more mean nothing to these people. To them, it's almost exclusively a case of "What can it do for me?" In a recent case where I was passing out Linux dvd's and cd's with the latest Open Office on it, the OO disks went like hotcakes. The Linux disks did not.
