Boxee - You are NOT “Open”
Another vivid example of how so many companies are only paying lip-service to the term “Open”.
A Suggestion
I’ve been researching building a better media PC, and recently someone pointed out Boxee to me. Supposedly, it’s built on top of XBMC - which is distributed under the GPL. I had tried XMBC in the past, it was mostly nice, but couldn’t get the results I wanted from it.
The home page for Boxee banner title is “boxee: the open, connected, social media center for mac os and linux”. Alright! “Open”! Hooray - and for Linux, and built on a GPL platform! Good stuff - or so I thought.
I signed up for the Boxee alpha - you just fill in your email. It took about two weeks to get an invite, and I was quite happy when it arrived.
