Ubuntu ROCKS!
Although I've never been a Linux Operating System convert, I have tried different versions through out the years and generally kept up with the development of the OS.
My litmus test for all of these flavors of Linux was simple; I wanted to be able to open an application (such as "Word"), play a CD or DVD (usually music), and surf the internet at the same time. That's it; no conversions/compatibility between say, OpenOffice and MS Office...no desire for peripherals such as pdas, printers or scanners...no heavy graphics editing or first-person shooter (FPS) gaming. Just the simple everyday tasks that people generally use computers for.
Most times it was the "two out of three" dilemma. But Ubuntu 8.10 is definitely the easiest version of Linux I've ever installed on a machine in the 10 years or so that I've been working with Linux.
