Zenwalk 6.0: Not Quite Ready
In this Ubuntu world, distributions such as Zenwalk go relatively unnoticed, yet offer great features to those that know about them. Originally based on Slackware, Zenwalk has always dared to be different, using the XFCE desktop rather than the more well known GNOME and KDE desktops. I’ve always enjoyed Zenwalk, with the only reason I don’t use it as my primary OS being many applications I depend on were missing from the distro’s repositories. Since Zenwalk 6.0 was released earlier this month, I’ve been looking forward to getting a chance to check it out. In my tests, I found Zenwalk 6.0 to be great in theory, yet I was completely unable to do virtually anything.
Normally I choose not to talk about the installation process in my reviews, unless something is dramatically different or there are problems I need to mention. For me, installing Zenwalk was no picnic. Instead of using a friendly installer such as the ones Fedora and Ubuntu have, Zenwalk uses its own monstrosity that proved to be very frustrating and completely devoid of user friendliness.
