Operating with open source
Myths and realities about open source software (OSS) came under discussion at the "Operating with Open Source" day, part of ICT Forum Wales.
Keynote speakers included Alan Cox, kernel developer at Linux and open source provider Red Hat, Graham Oakes, founder of business consultancy Graham Oakes Ltd and Mark Taylor, executive director of the Open Source Consortium.
Cox kicked off the discussion with a comment intended to encourage an objective view of software: "According to some studies, Windows is faster but those studies are sponsored by Microsoft. Other studies say Linux is better - but those are sponsored by open source people."
The idea that OSS is free of cost was one of the first myths to be challenged. Though one can download OSS free of charge, training and support costs ought not to be forgotten.
