How Much RAM Do You Really Need?
How much RAM does your PC have? If you run Windows XP, it is probably in the range of 512 MB to 1 GB. Older Windows versions will do the job with less than that, but as soon as you execute demanding applications or more than one application at a time, anything below 512 MB will likely translate into performance bottlenecks.
Of course, the more RAM you have, the better off you are - but how much memory do you really need?

512 MB
512 MB of RAM is how much I have and I use Suse 10 with Gnome with usually only a couple applications open at the most. I have no other OSes on my system - my system didn't even come with Windows. I guess it comes from too many years of not having enough RAM and using Windows which is very inept at multitasking. I don't play any games on my computer and I do mostly web design so I don't need much in memory at once for documents. I don't listen to music while I am on the computer, so I don't have that running in the background and I have never got into instant messaging or irc, so those aren't running in the background either.
