CAD - Computer Aided Death
If you prefer an open source operating system, perhaps a Linux-based one, rather than one of the big proprietary systems by Microsoft or Apple, how far would you be prepared to go to convince others to try out your OS of choice? Is there such a thing as "Operating System Bigotry"?
There's a website called "Boycott Novell" and with a name like that you can guess the slant of the content. They include the following at the top of pages: "Exploring the reality behind exclusionary deals with Microsoft and their subtle (yet severe) implications." That is fair enough, especially as some questionable dealings by the software giant have been brought to our attention over the years. However, this article about MS Windows leading to loss of life left me with a really uneasy feeling. Reference is made to earlier articles and a "current" example is cited of a doctor connecting remotely from a Win 7 computer for some medical records but updates caused a 15 minute delay with dire consequences. Now, while I am deeply saddened by any death that could have been prevented, the bad feeling I felt after reading this wasn't to do with the deaths mentioned, but more to do with the extremely tenuous link these had with the operating system.
I have used Ubuntu for around 3-4 years and I find it to be superior to MS Windows XP which I previously ran, and even more in advance of Win V/7. Even so, I find it extremely difficult to concur with the Boycott Novell article in this instance, and there are several reasons for it.
