This Week's Open Source Round Up
Two big announcements from Mozilla and the Free Software Foundation were grabbing all the headlines this week but there were a number of other interesting things happening as well, from contrarian open source theory to the emergence of a surprise open source advocate.
The first of the new releases came from the Free Software Foundation, which announced the public draft of version 3 of the GNU GPL (General Public Licence). The GPL is the most popular and widespread of the open source licences and the revision of the terms has been long overdue.
Fans of Mozilla's Thunderbird email client were a happy bunch this week. Why? The much-awaited version 1.5 was released!
Two surprises in this week's news bag. The first came from the outing of a secret open source proponent: The US Department of Homeland Security.
The second surprise came courtesy of Forrester Research, which reported very low Linux adoption rates in Australasia. The study found only 18% of the companies surveyed in Australia and New Zealand were using Linux and only 11% were considering it.
