Save The GIMP!

GIMP

I recently learned that the fabulous GNU Image Manipulation Program is developed and maintained but only three main hackers!!!... There used to be another developer, but he's no longer available. To think that such an open source flagship is kept alive by so few people should help understand why the much anticipated single screen GIMP 2.8 has been delayed again.

From here I would like to ask you to help this project in whichever way you can. Spread the word, donate or offer your help as a developer.

rest here

re: Save the GIMP

It's doomed.

First off it has a name and logo that has ZERO branding what-so-ever to what the software does.

Second, it's offensive, plain and simple. It wouldn't pass thru 90% of corporates content/bad word filters.

How dumb do the developers have to be to continue on with such a stupid product name.

Finally I always imagine that somewhere out there is a hidden bank account for the 3 dev's with ADOBE pouring money into them to keep GIMP such a major suck ass product.

Stupid name, bad website, clunky application. Anyone that needs to do "real" graphics work will give it a try and run crying with wads of cash clenched in their hands begging ADOBE to sell them PHOTOSHOP at whatever price they want.

The dev's obviously have some talent, it's a shame they hide it so well behind their sad and pathetic junior high school antics.

But...

... you don't hide anything! The same old grumpy vonskippy as usual.

GIMP and the corporate world

Vonskippy, one day you'll get out of university and get a real job, so you'll know what your fantasized corporate world actually is.

I tell you, it's a lot of fun. But you should quit it when you get in your 40s, or the damage to your health will get irrecoverable.

Too much emotions can cloud your judgement of open source mess.

Emotions? Uhm no, it's probably the wine. However I don't drink enough to compare €0 Gimp with €3300 Adobe CS5 for business, and cover in insults the former and its three creators as a consequence.

When I was in the corporate world, i was into the car engineering business. My image manipulation needs were limited to presentations to show my components or design intent in meetings, and for that, Gimp worked just fine. It was actually overkill.

The multimedia business is not the only one out there - luckily for our brains. My needs were very limited, but a photography enthusiast or even a wedding photographer can do away with the Gimp just fine as well, and that's a lot of people those three folks are helping.

The problem for the Gimp is probably that "fresh meat" developers go with alternative newer projects that have been popping up for some time, undermining also its status of must-have graphics app.

Vonskippy knows

I pee'd on his rug once.

re: crude remarks?

"Crude remarks do not amuse people?"

Yes they do. Big Grin

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
