Linux Mint 9 LXDE: The Experiment Begins
I got a call from one of my amateur radio associates who wanted help reinstalling the OS on his old Compaq desktop. I offered to download a distro for him to try. I only installed the first: Linux Mint 9 LXDE. And therein lies a (short) tale.
Step 1. From past experience I know that, when creating a dual-boot Windows/Linux system, it's easier to install Windows first, then Linux. But the hard drive must be partitioned before installing Windows. So I booted the Mint 9 live CD, and ran cfdisk to repartition the hard drive. (It had a 9 GB partition for Red Hat, and a 0.5 GB swap partition. I left the swap partition but divided the first half into 4 and 5 GB for Windows and Linux, respectively.)
Step 2. Installing Windows was routine, because when partitioning I had identified the first partition as type Windows 95 and "bootable". Windows 2000 correctly identified that as the partition to use, and formatted the partition for NTFS. But then when it finished with the CD and went to reboot to the hard drive, I got a "grub>" prompt instead.
