Getting those multimedia keys to work in Kubuntu
Nowadays, it’s rare for your keyboard to have just the standard 104-keys. Manufacturers are shipping many computers with what they usually call “Multimedia” keyboards or something similar. You’ve got your button for e-mail, volume, internet browsing, and all kinds of other tasks that can be done more efficiently with a dedicated key assigned to it.
Most of the time, Windows XP will do a good job figuring out some of the basic tasks, like knowing that your “Mail” button opens your default mail handling application, and that your “Volume” knob or button will control Windows’ volume. In Linux that support sometimes doesn’t come right out of the box, but with a little tweaking all will be working like it should.
This tutorial is a tad lengthy, but I tried to thoroughly explain some of the steps for people that are Linux beginners and aren’t as comfortable with just throwing commands around and not knowing what they do.
