IBM Expands Open Source
IBM said Tuesday that it is beefing up its open-source support beyond Linux to accelerate the adoption of open computing to reach new customers and add to the top line.
In the announcement, timed to coincide with the fifteenth anniversary of Linux, the IT services behemoth said it would focus its open-source efforts in eight areas: Web-application servers, development tools, client-side middleware and data servers, as well as systems management, open hardware architectures, grid computing and its business consulting and technology services arm.
"IBM is going to be as bold and aggressive with open source as we are with Linux ... more broadly transforming our company with the open movement," Scott Handy, IBM vice president of Linux and open source, said in statement.
The company did not provide specifics on how much the move would add to sales, but said it views the move as a "growth strategy."
