Licensing and Freedom, the OpenBSD way
After having read the last DistroWatch Weekly, Issue 169, 18 September 2006, I was tempted to express my anger against the futile loss of energy in the "licensing fight" that led into cdrtools forking in Debian — but also in other distros.
Of course, I don't expect anybody else but Joerg Schilling to agree with me, however I'll keep my ideas on the GPL and on DFSG:
*GPL is one of the worse posible choices in terms of freedom: it's unclear, it's restrictive, and it generates a lot of useless debates;
*DFSG is too "Nazi", as it declares the majority of non-GPL licenses as "not free enough for Debian", no matter they're OSI-approved.
Nevertheless, I'm using both Linux (as a kernel) and Debian (as one of the distros using it), but this is not because of the license: it's merely because I like Linux and it suits my needs.
How much freedom do I need?
