oldfool.org: I started using the PCLinuxOS Linux distribution around 5 years ago. One day in a moment of disgust with Microsoft XP I downloaded a copy of PCLOS .92 and ran it on my PC.

sloppyganger.blogspot: My goal was to check on what was new in this distro but not necessarily to fully replace my installation of Ubuntu 8.10. After about 10 minutes in 2009.1, I could not double click the "Install" icon on the desktop fast enough.

wamukota.blogspot: As one might expect from PCLinuxOS, the LiveCD allows an easy HD install and within a matter of minutes, you have PCLinux2009.1 running.

reddevil62-techhead.blogspot: PCLinuxOS 2009.1 was running beautifully. The installation from the live CD had retained the settings and I had completed all my usual post-install multimedia checks. So why, by all that's holy, did I think that switching on Compiz's 3D effects might be A Good Thing To Try?

Keep reading for a look back at all the ways that desktop Linux has become easier to use -- and those in which it has become more difficult -- over the past ten years. I installed Linux to my laptop for the first time in the summer of 2006. I started with SUSE, then moved onto Mandriva and finally settled on Fedora Core. By early 2007 I was using Fedora full time. There was no more Windows partition on my laptop. When I ran into problems or incompatibilities with Linux, my options were to sink or swim. There was no Windows to revert back to. Read more
