PCLinuxOS 2008: We have Another Winner

PCLOS

distrogue.blogspot: I waxed poetic about PCLinuxOS 2007 a few months ago when I compared it to Mint (and even earlier about version 0.93a). The new version, PCLinuxOS 2008, will ship with KDE 4, but at the time of writing, the final isn't out yet. They recently released a so-called "MiniMe" version of the final product with KDE 3.5, and it's better than ever- to the point that I would actually use it.

PCLinuxOS 2008 on my ThinkPad T61

temporaryland.wordpress: A few weeks ago I wrote about my experiences installing several different distributions on my ThinkPad T61. One of the distributions I tested was PCLinuxOS 2007 and there were a couple of small issues. With the recent release of the 2008 version I thought it would be good to write about how this new version works on my laptop. However, that could be summarized in just one phrase:

PCLOS Day 9 - Wrapping up the Control Center

PCLOS

ruminations: I am enjoying these days with the control center, but it’s time to wrap it up and move on. There are plenty of other things that need attention.

PCLinuxOS Day 8 - Between a Desktop and Server

PCLOS

ruminations: Another day at the control center. I am impressed with the scope of tasks that can be executed via one tool. Earlier I mentioned Webmin and the control center shares quite a few characteristics with that tool (though the functions are different, of course). Let’s continue digging deeper.

PCLinuxOS 2008 ‘MiniMe’

PCLOS

fareast.linuxdiary: Is a minimal version of PCLinuxOS that comes with just the bare bones, allowing you to install exactly what you need; the liveCD is a very fast boot, and true to its Mandriva roots is extremely easy to configure through the Control Centre.

PCLinuxOS Day 7 - Control Center Part 2

PCLOS

ruminations: Two tasks remained under the heading Sharing: settting up file/printserver and setting up a share. The first task ran into a snag quickly with an error message that the name ‘localhost’ wasn’t correct for a DNS server. Setting up a Samba share wasn’t error free as well.

PCLinuxOS Day 6 - Start with the Control Center, Ending with Webmin

PCLOS

ruminations: The next few days/articles I will spend time in the PCLinuxOS control center. It is a central hub for all kinds of system-related tasks, which at least means you need to have administrator rights.

PCLinuxOS Day 5: Alternative Graphical Environments

PCLOS

ruminations: One of the nicer things about *nix systems is that even your graphical work environment, the GUI, is a matter of choice. In this article I will explore how easy it is to add both GNOME and Xfce to PCLinuxOS.

Look at PCLinuxOS 2008 ‘MiniMe’ Edition

PCLOS

linuxlove.org: The 2008 MiniMe edition it’s just a little preview of what will be available in the final release. It’s name suits this release very well as it’s indeed small. The ISO is about 200MB in size, it provides a very basic KDE 3.5.8 desktop and ALSA 1.0.15 running under a 2.6.22.15 kernel.

PCLinuxOS

garbledzombie.wordpress: PCLinuxOS is a Mandriva fork that seemingly shot up in distrowatch’s top distros list. I was more than a tad surprised at this, seeing a world where nobody ever mentioned PCLinuxOS as much as say, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora or OpenSUSE. Intrigued, I read more about this distro and decided to give it a shot.
