TM Donation Drive, Updates

Site News

Our donation drive has been going well and we thank all so much, as we do those that allowed ads for my site. But it seems to be winding down, pledges have seemed to have stopped. I'll leave up the reminder up a few more days maybe, but then we'll conclude the 2013 Donation Drive. Report and formal thank you to follow. Please see the donation page if you'd like to help.

back up & running

Sorry for the unusually long delay. I forget how long it really takes to set up a new system these days what with having to "archive" crap first then "importing" them instead of copying a directory of nice text files or <gasp> linking to the old directory or file... I'm starting to have Windows flashbacks... oh, sorry. Anywho, ole Akregator is doing its thing pulling in today's headlines now.

disk trouble

Site News

I've been having trouble with my disk lately. I'm not sure if it's the disk or my install, but it looks a whole lot like a disk dying. So, it'll take me a few hours to get back up and running before I can search for cool news links. Sorry, and I'll get back as soon as I can. Thanks!

TM Donation Drive

Site News

We haven't had a donation drive since 2011 and now is a good time. As some of you know, I recently lost one of my gigs and I've yet to replace that income. After a protracted illness, I'm feeling much better these days and have tried to ramp up my work around here. If you'd like to help keep TM coming to you, please see my donation page for details how to help.

Don't Forget Feeds

Site News

Even when I'm not able to update the site as much as I would like, please note the feeds Tuxmachines pulls in. In the side columns below the fold are Linux.com, LinuxToday.com, and more. On the news feed page is a wider variety.

Big Thank You for Donations

I wanted to formally thank again those who donated to tuxmachines' Christmas stocking this year at Texstar's suggestion.

A bad thunderstorm is rolling in. Anyone wanna bet me how long before the lights go out?

Yep, there go the tornado warning sirens...

Downtime

Site News

Hey, some may have noticed that we've been offline for a bit. We experienced some rather bad storms the other night and many lost electrical service. That includes me and tuxmachines. It's back on now and hopefully the predicted storms tonight won't knock us offline again.

Sorry for the delay in getting started today. I got up this morning and my work machine was not going to work no more. I'm back up now and will update the site as soon as I can.

Bufferbloat Is Still Being Fought In Linux Kernel, Another Big Improvement Queued

Bufferbloat is the excess buffering of packets resulting in high latency, jitter, and lower network throughput. There's been efforts to battle bufferbloat within the Linux kernel going back a long time while this week another new patch has surfaced. A Phoronix reader pointed out to us a patch that's now been queued up in net-next for Linux 4.7 and could end up being back-ported to Linux stable releases. Questions and answers: Ubuntu bq tablet

I will say this. So far I've used the Ubuntu tablet for over a week and prefer using it over any other tablet...even with its quirks. In fact, it's the first mobile device that has me comfortable being away from my trusty desktop environment. Having mobile versions of The GIMP and LibreOffice alone is worth the price of admission. It's not perfect (far from it), but it's a sleek, mobile version of Linux that works incredibly well, especially considering how young it is. Read more
