More evidence that the Linux wars have moved to OpenStack
Submitted by Rianne Schestowitz on Tuesday 15th of April 2014 05:04:05 PM Filed under

It’s sort of funny that the press release announcing the new Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS release seems as focused on Ubuntu OpenStack as on Linux per se. It’s studded with partner testimonials from Cisco, Mellanox, NTT Software, Brocade lauding Ubuntu OpenStack. But then again, that makes sense given that the vendor battlefield has shifted from core operating system to core cloud infrastructure, where Canonical OpenStack has gained traction with Hewlett Packard and other big cloud providers.

Linux KVM Virtualization comes to IBM Power servers soon
Submitted by Rianne Schestowitz on Friday 11th of April 2014 08:42:55 PM Filed under

In a blog posting, Jim Wasko, Director of IBM’s Linux Technology Center, said "that a Power Systems version of KVM, PowerKVM, will be available on IBM’s next generation Power Systems servers tuned for Linux before the end of the quarter."
Porting KVM to Power has not been easy. IBM has been working hard on it since 2011. Sources say that PowerKVM will be available both from Red Hat and SUSE in their main enterprise Linux distributions, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES).

Ubuntu One users can migrate to Open Source ownCloud
Submitted by Roy Schestowitz on Friday 4th of April 2014 06:57:25 AM Filed under

ownCloud is an open source project, so you can study the code, just like any other free software project whether it be WordPress or Drupal. You can install ownCloud on your own server, you can choose a provider which is outside the USA and is not very NSA friendly. You own your very cloud just the way you own any site that you run. If you don’t want to deal with running your own server then you can choose ownCloud recommend providers and get it as SaaS.

Linux kernel block maintainer, Btrfs lead developer and new Facebook employee Chris Mason revealed the news at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit in Napa Valley on Thursday, Phoronix reported. Mason said that Facebook will trial Btrfs in its "web tier" servers, explaining that's the easiest tier to recover if necessary, though we imagine Facebook might ask the NSA for its backup copy in the event of disaster.

7 free GIMP scripts and plug-ins for filters, brushes, textures and more
The free and open source photo-editing program called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a nice alternative to the subscription-based or boxed versions of its competition (including PhotoShop). Whether you’re a beginner with GIMP or a seasoned pro, there’s lots to love.
Some of GIMP’s greatest assets are the plugins and scripts created by numerous independent programmers. At one time, there was a massive collection called the GIMP Plugin Registry, but that resource is no longer available. Consequently, you must search the Internet for GIMP plug-ins and scripts.
To start you on the right track, we’ve selected our favorite plugins and scripts for you to try, with a brief description of each, and a link to the resource location. First; however, we should explain the complicated process of how to install these treasures and where to find them on the GIMP menus.

Get started with Lumina for your Linux desktop
For a good number of years, there was a desktop operating system (OS) based on FreeBSD called PC-BSD. It was intended as an OS for general use, which was noteworthy because BSD development mostly focuses on servers. For most of its life, PC-BSD shipped with the KDE desktop by default, but the more KDE came to depend on Linux-specific technology, the more PC-BSD migrated away from it. PC-BSD became Trident, and its default desktop is Lumina, a collection of widgets written to use the same Qt toolkit that KDE is based upon, running on the Fluxbox window manager.
You may find the Lumina desktop in your Linux distribution's software repository or in BSD's ports tree. If you install Lumina and you're already running another desktop, you may find yourself with redundant applications (two PDF readers, two file managers, and so on) because Lumina includes a few integrated applications. If you just want to try the Lumina desktop, you can install a Lumina-based BSD distribution in a virtual machine, such as GNOME Boxes.
