Hardware/software kit teaches embedded Linux

Intellimetrix, a specialist in real-time and embedded software development and training, has introduced a low-cost embedded Linux learning kit. Aptly named the Embedded Linux Learning Kit (ELLK), the kit comprises an ARM-based SBC (single-board computer), cables, power supply, Linux OS, development tools, and comprehensive documentation.

According to Intellimetrix founder and principal consultant Doug Abbott, ELLK offers a "practical, self-paced, hands-on way to get started in the exciting world of embedded Linux. Unlike so-called development kits -- a single board computer (SBC), a power supply, cables, and a CD with a random collection of Linux software -- the ELLK is specifically designed to teach embedded Linux."

Raspberry Pi gains $35 HAT-based touchscreen

4D Systems and Newark Element14 launched a 2.4-inch, QVGA “4DPi-24-HAT” resistive touchscreen for the Pi for $35, said to be the first to use a HAT design. Last October, the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Eben Upton briefly demonstrated an upcoming official Raspberry Pi touchscreen. It’s unclear whether that 7-inch, VGA capacitive touchscreen is still on course, but in the meantime, there are a variety of RPi touchscreen options to choose from. The latest is a 4DPi-24-HAT screen from 4D Systems and distributor Newark Element14. It’s claimed to be the first to offer full compatibility with the Pi’s HAT (Hardware Attached on Top) add-on card standard. Read more
